The Bridge
The Bridge was developed directly as a result of feedback from our young people that wanted more arts opportunities in teenage years (providing pathways from our schools’ programme to Spotlight), and something to do in the lengthy summer holidays after exams. It provides 4 weeks of structured workshops, seminars and practical sessions led by talented musicians and industry professionals for 15 young people in the early summer holidays after exams.
Aimed at those who have finished year 11 or 12, young people are recruited from schools that we already engage with through School Ground Sounds (SGS: our music development programme in schools) and through open marketing with partner organisations, schools, and youth groups.
We will aim to recruit those living in the 25% most deprived areas in the UK, but we are also looking for those who face other barriers to accessing music (mental health, social, cultural, background). Of those already engaged in our schools’ programme, a third already meet this criteria.
The free programme aims to bridge the gap beyond any skills learnt (or indeed not learnt) in school and those needed to progress their talents further, potentially to a career. It will empower the young people by embracing talent and creativity, increasing confidence in performing, developing musicality, and helping them better understand the range of further arts educational opportunities, and/or career opportunities in the creative industries, and how to pursue these.
